Some have described the changing face of Kimathi University College of Technology in the last two years as unprecedented while others have simply termed it monumental. True, this premier technology institution, started almost thirty eight years ago, has evolved from a nebulous institute to its current status of a public university.
They say its the standards that you set for yourself that will determine the quality of life that you lead. And judging from the transformation that KUCT is undergoing, no doubt the founders of this institution set high ceilings for what they hoped it would be one day.
Many prominent personalities have been associated with KUCT since its inception as an institution of Technology. The current chairman of the university council Mr. James Waibochi falls in this category and therefore deserves special mention for his visionary leadership that has put the institution not only on the national but also global scene. An astute businessman and administrator, the chairman’s unswerving commitment to the welfare of the university has radically changed its face and the surrounding region.
Before being elevated to a university, physical infrastructure was a challenge but thanks to support from the Government through the ministry of higher education, a number of new buildings have been put up while a couple of others have been refurbished. But pumping colossal sums of money for infrastructural development is one thing and realizing the desired results is another thing altogether. Those well versed with the antics of the Nyayo era can best attest to this assertion.
Prudent and focused management are the pillars of the development being witnessed in KUCT. Under the stewardship of the principal, Prof. Ndirangu Kioni, the university has completed the first phase of an ultra-modern Resource Centre. The second phase is under construction and its expected to be complete within this year.
The first phase houses the office of the principal and his deputies, Dr. M. Gachari and Prof. N. N. Bwana. Other key administrators like registrars and the Finance department are also within the building. But of cardinal importance are the learning and research facilities at the Resource Centre.
An expansive Library has its space in this landmark building and adjacent to it is a modern cyber Café. Being a university of technology the Resource Centre is also a hub for physical sciences laboratories. In addition students have spacious lecture theatres conducive for lecturer-student interaction.
Another key infrastructural development in this fast developing university college is a Tourism sanctuary. The facility is expected to be a melting point for ideas and research for students pursuing Tourism programmes. In addition, the sanctuary will boost the Mt. Kenya Tourism circuit that attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year.
And being environmentally conscious, KUCT has set up a sound waste disposal sewerage system that meets a world class university. Its size clearly points to an anticipated high population of both students and staff .
