Kimathi University College of Technology is proud to join global academic, scientific and engineering community through Laserfest in its year-long Silver Jubilee celebrations to mark the discovery of the technology in 1960.
Watching your favourite movie on DVD, surfing the Web, scanning barcodes at the grocery store; these are some of the everyday uses of lasers. But Laser Technology is much more than that: it is one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century and is credited for revolutionalizing the field of science and technology.
Among the many fields that have benefited from Laser Technology include: Aerospace, Automotive, Shipbuilding industries, Telecommunications, Medicine, scientific research, etc…
Through a series of events and programs around the world, LaserFest will showcase the key role played by laser technology in today’s world.
Kimathi University College of Technology has received accolade from the LaserFest organisers and joins 36 other grant recipients across the globe. KUCT and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa are the only grant recipients from Africa, placing them on top in the continent in this rare global scientific event.
A grant of 4,400 US$ has been awarded to KUCT by American Physical Society, APS with their partners: OSA, Optical Society of America, SPIE, International Society of Optics and Photonics and IEEE Photonics Society
Dr. Alphonse Niyibizi of Mathematics and physical Sciences department handed over the donation to KUCT principal, Prof. Ndirangu Kioni and the Acting Finance officer, Mr. James Njaria at a brief ceremony in the Principal’s office. Congratulating Dr. Niyibizi, Prof. Kioni said the don was a good example to other members of staff on their role of fundraising for academic research and extension activities and putting the University on the global map.
KUCT community is invited to actively participate in the Laserfest celebrations activities which will include among others the production of a DVD to be sent to global scientific and academic organisations through our sponsors to showcase our fast growing University of Technology. Different programs will be highlighted in subsequent issues of the KuctNewsletter.
